Stationary Engineer 3
Full-time; 40 hours per week. | ON-SITE

The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About the Opportunity:
As a Stationary Engineer 3, you will maintain and repair steam boilers, central steam distribution systems, and related mechanical equipment to ensure reliable facility operations. You will service and troubleshoot commercial refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, and chilled water systems, while analyzing and maintaining control systems that include electrical, electronic, and pneumatic sensors and actuators. This position also performs preventative maintenance on water treatment systems such as cooling towers, hot water loops, and chilled water systems, and assists with the fabrication and installation of temperature and humidity control components for building heating and ventilation systems.

Requirements

Some of What You’ll Enjoy Doing Includes:
  • Operate and maintain the Powerhouse and high-pressure steam heating plant that supplies heat, hot water, and chilled water to 14 Capital Campus buildings.
  • Monitor, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, condensers, steam and condensate return systems, piping, controls, and meters.
  • Use the Metasys central control system to monitor and adjust campus steam and chilled water operations.
  • Perform boiler and feedwater testing and treatment to ensure safe and efficient plant operations.
  • Serve as the lead shift operator, coordinating work assignments and maintaining 24/7/365 operational coverage and safe power plant housekeeping practices.
  • Prepare operational reports, identify training needs, support employee licensing and certifications, and develop scopes of work, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for projects.
  • Monitor Capital Lake levels and ensure dam operations through the Metasys control system, reporting unusual conditions that could create flooding or low-water risks.
  • Serve as the primary contact for after-hours emergency and non-emergency calls for Thurston County DES-owned facilities.
  • Follow DES safety policies and procedures by maintaining a safe work environment, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and promptly reporting and addressing unsafe conditions.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of high-pressure boilers and heating equipment OR Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary and/or Marine Engineering course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college.

In addition to the above required qualifications, a candidate must possess one (1) of the following options to qualify:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 2 in state service.
[OPTION 2]
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Marine Steam Propulsion Engineer.

  • Knowledge of high-pressure boiler operations, chilled water plant systems, and related mechanical equipment, including fuels, materials, tools, safety practices, and automatic controls.
  • Ability to test, analyze, and maintain steam boilers and auxiliary equipment; read blueprints and plans; estimate labor and materials; and safely use hand, power, and specialized tools.
  • Ability to work independently, supervise and instruct others, maintain records and reports, and perform physically demanding work in extreme temperatures.
  • Demonstrates reliability and professionalism by consistently delivering high-quality results with minimal oversight while earning the trust and respect of coworkers and customers.
