Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading training sessions at the South Carolina Fire Academy, mainly teaching industrial and aircraft rescue firefighting, while also helping with other emergency response programs like hazardous materials and rescue operations.

You'll handle planning, marketing, and administrative tasks for the courses, plus some equipment setup and emergency response duties.

It's a great fit for someone with hands-on firefighting experience who enjoys teaching and working in high-pressure, team-oriented environments.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma with relevant firefighting program experience
  • 3 years of instructional experience in fire prevention, protection, and related courses (preferred)
  • Extensive knowledge of fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, NFPA standards, and OSHA regulations
  • Ability to teach, develop, deliver, and market training programs to fire departments and emergency organizations
  • Valid driver's license with compliant 10-year motor vehicle record and ability to drive state vehicles
  • Physical ability to lift over 100 lbs, work in hazardous environments, use PPE and SCBA, and pass respirator fit testing and OSHA medical physical
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, in inclement weather, and occasional overnight travel

Responsibilities

  • You will serve as a Lead Instructor for the South Carolina Fire Academy.
  • You will focus on teaching Industrial and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) but will also assist with Haz-Mat, Municipal, and Rescue programs.
  • You will market, plan, and coordinate assigned programs to include registering students, billing and preparing customer contracts, and submitting student payments after course completion.
  • You will assist with minor maintenance and the set-up of fire equipment and props.
  • You will perform other duties such as serving as a member of the site emergency team on the State Fire campus and may deploy to disasters and emergencies as part of the Incident Support Team and Firefighter Mobilization.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma and relevant program experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years’ instructional experience in fire prevention, fire protection, and related courses.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials mitigation methods, equipment, and/or techniques, National Fire Protection Association standards, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to teach, develop, deliver, and market academy training programs to customers, fire departments, and other emergency service organizations.
  • Must be able to work with the public, fire departments, customers, and other SCFA employees.

Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and 10-year MVR that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
  • Must be able to drive state vehicles.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays in inclement weather and in hazardous environments.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, raise and lower ladders, climb ladders, and move or lift equipment or objects over 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in IDLH or hazardous environments that require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or the use of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), enter burn buildings with smoke present, and fight live fires on training props (both in and outside).
  • Must be able to successfully complete a fit testing for respirator use and successfully complete an OSHA compliant medical physical.
