This position leads, oversees and participates in the more complex and difficult diagnostic work of Fleet staff responsible for the major and minor repairs on all systems of diesel and gasoline engines, including emissions testing; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the advanced journey level class in the Mechanic series.
Positions at this level are distinguished from the other class within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned.
Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series.
Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direction from the Fleet Services Supervisor and higher level management staff.
Acts as a lead worker, exercising functional and technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results.
Type of ExaminationA civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination.

Essential Functions:
Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.Plans, schedules and directs the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline equipment; performs the most complex repair, maintenance, installation and diagnostic duties; performs safety inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.Assists in coordinating and participates in after hour emergency and call services.Maintains records of all equipment repairs.Attends and participates in professional group meetings.
Stays abreast of innovations and new technology; researches technical data required for the repair of automotive and construction equipment system.Provides technical and safety information and training to other city staff.Prepares clear and concise reports.Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams and manufacturers' technical service bulletins.Conducts daily inspection of shop area and inventory of vehicles and equipment.Inspects and cleans assigned fuel islands on a rotation basis.Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure efficient and effective operations.
Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials, equipment, and vendors, assisting with specifications, and requisitioning materials as needed.Participates in the preparation and administration of the function budget.Performs emissions testing duties, performs State of Nevada Emission Certification testing; analyzes emission certification failures and recommends solutions.Marginal Functions:Coordinates the transportation and storage of vehicles and equipment that will be auctioned.Operates and secures assigned vehicle and other assigned equipment; determines whether vehicle is in good working order; maintains vehicle in clean and fueled condition.Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications Experience:Five years of increasingly responsible vehicle/equipment mechanical repair experience across a range of light, medium, and heavy duty vehicles and equipment which included at least (1) year of experience in the automotive mechanical repair of modern day automotive equipment.Experience in diesel, electric, and/or alternative fuels, and electric and electronic repair strongly preferred.Supervisory or lead responsibility experience within the above experience strongly preferred.Training:Equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of an accredited automotive and diesel technician training program.Licenses and Certifications:Possession of an appropriate valid Commercial Class B driver's license within nine (9) months of date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of a valid forklift certificate issued by the city of Las Vegas within six (6) months of the date of appointment.Possession of a 2G Emissions Inspector license from the state of Nevada within six months (6) of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.Possession of the following licenses and certificates are desirable: -An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate in one or more areas-Class A Commercial Driver's license-Tanker Endorsement on commercial driver's license-Environmental Protection Agency Section 609 certificate Special Requirements:Certain city functions operate on a 24 hour per day, seven day per week schedule, and may require support on any shift.
May be required to respond to calls for assistance during any shift.
