General Responsibility
Serve as a Special Agent in SLED's Computer Crimes Unit. Participate in the detection of crime and enforcement of criminal laws related to the use of computers on the internet. Plan, conduct and complete investigations/examinations of difficult crimes and administrative cases, or conduct portions of difficult investigations/examinations.

Specific Duties:

Conduct examinations: Participate in the forensic examination of sized electronic devices.

Examine electronic devices on-scene or in laboratory and obtain supporting information relating to violations or possible violations of state or federal law.

Report information; prepare an examinations report that accurately depicts the findings of electronic devices submitted; provide courtroom testimony.

Propose new or modified analytical procedures to be used by examiners.

Conduct Investigations: Participate in gathering and developing material facts and obtaining supporting information relating to violations or possible violations of state or federal law by interviewing or interrogating suspects, victims and witnesses to crimes or relevant matters.

Examine records, collect physical and documentary evidence and establish necessary contacts with other law enforcement officials and the public.

Support Program Areas: Perform various support tasks related to training, communication, special assignments and other functional areas of responsibility.

Perform other duties of a Special Agent with statewide powers of arrest to ensure compliance with state laws and SLED policy.

Attend professional training sessions in order to maintain expertise in the area of digital forensics.

  • Perform Administrative Tasks: Perform related administrative duties as required. Maintain up-to-date case information records in case management system and conduct periodic evidence inventory inspections to ensure evidence is being properly maintained as required by SLED policy.
  • Support Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement: Coordinate tasks and assistance with law enforcement for the obtaining, processing and reporting of seized evidence from onsite locations.
  • Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Proficient use on a personal computer and Microsoft Office Software.
    • Above average knowledge of computer operations.
    • Working knowledge of the internet, email and social media.
    • Must be a certified Class I law enforcement officer or have the ability to become a Class I officer through the SC Criminal Justice Academy or the equivalent from another state.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain Secret Clearance.
    • Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing or job functions.
    • Primary work environment of this position consists of working in a laboratory environment Monday-Friday, with some off-site work.
    • Position is subject to periodic emergency call 24-hours, seven days a week.
    • Position requires overnight travel in and out of state.
    • Selected candidate must be available for after hour response to request for service.
    • Must be able to lift items of evidence up to 40 pounds.
    • Must be able to perform all of the physical requirements of a certified Class I LEO including, but is not limited to, the apprehension and arrest of criminals, including physically resistant individuals; performing investigations, inspections, search and seizures, including searching vehicles, buildings, attics, and crawl spaces; working crowd control and security during special events, including protests, marches, concerts, political rallies, and other events; working emergency response during natural disasters and other emergent crises.

      Must be able to respond 24/7 as needed and able to stand post or take other law enforcement action for long periods of continuous time (12+ hours).

      Qualifications

      • Experience in interviews or interrogations is preferred.
