Job Description

Summary

This role involves coordinating fire training programs across several counties in South Carolina, managing instructors, and delivering hands-on classes to help local fire departments stay prepared.

It also includes assessing training needs, representing the state fire academy at meetings, and responding to emergencies when needed.

A good fit would be someone with experience teaching fire-related courses who enjoys travel, fieldwork, and supporting community safety efforts.

Key Requirements

  • Fire Academy instructor qualifications and experience (preferred)
  • Knowledge of fire department operations, suppression, rescue methods, NFPA standards, OSHA regulations, and fire service professional standards (preferred)
  • Valid driver's license with compliant 10-year motor vehicle record
  • Ability to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and in various weather conditions
  • Physical ability to lift over 50 pounds, wear PPE, pass respirator fit testing and OSHA medical physical, and work in hazardous environments

Responsibilities

  • You will serve as a Regional Coordinator to support local fire and emergency service organizations by planning, coordinating, scheduling, delivering and evaluating a variety of training courses and programs (Region 3 – Sumter, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, Florence, Williamsburg, Clarendon, and Lee).
  • You will supervise and schedule regionally assigned instructors to teach training courses and programs.
  • You will assist with the planning, training, certification, and documentation of instructors.
  • You will evaluate instructors and the effectiveness of programs, both in the classroom and in field environments.
  • You will serve as a lead instructor teaching, conducting, and evaluating SCFA courses including, but not limited to, new instructor orientations, course orientations, and fire service classes.
  • You will survey and assess fire and emergency services training needs and trends.
  • You will attend regional association meetings, fire department training sessions, and other meetings or related functions to represent State Fire and the SC Fire Academy.
  • You may deploy to disasters and emergencies as part of the Incident Support Team and Firefighter Mobilization and respond to emergency scenes as a member of the State Fire CLEAR Team.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma and relevant program experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years instructional experience in fire prevention, fire protection, and/or related courses.
  • Fire Academy instructor qualifications and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of fire department operations, fire suppression and rescue methods, National Fire Protection Association standards, OSHA regulations, and fire service professional standards.

Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and 10-year MVR that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
  • Must be able to drive a state or personal vehicle to complete assigned job duties.
  • Must be able to work outside of normal agency office hours, including nights, weekends, and/or holiday.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and austere environments.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift objects over 50 pounds, wear PPE, (to include fit testing for respirator use and successful completion of required OSHA-compliant medical physical), and work within IDLH environments.
