The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an enthusiastic Solid Waste Specialist Trainee dedicated to learning how to protect the health of Pennsylvania's citizens and environment through conducting diligent inspections of solid waste facilities. As part of our team, you will play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges and making a positive impact in the community. Your efforts will help ensure that hazardous sites are properly managed and cleaned up, contributing to a safer and healthier environment. Requirements

As a Solid Waste Specialist Trainee, you will participate in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a Solid Waste Specialist.

Successful completion of the training program results in promotion to Solid Waste Specialist.

Within this role, you will learn the skills necessary to enforce solid waste rules and regulations relative to the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, processing, and disposal of solid waste.

Your duties will focus on hazardous waste, residual waste, municipal waste, infectious and pathological waste, and emergency response waste.

Additional areas of focus include learning how to review permit applications and plans to determine if the proposed plans are in compliance with departmental regulations, as well as collecting samples of various media and wastes to establish compliance status.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time, upon successful completion of the training period.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a current driver's license which is not under suspension and is REAL ID compliant.
