Summary

This job involves providing counseling and support to military personnel and families dealing with substance abuse issues, including creating treatment plans, leading therapy sessions, and overseeing trainees in a residential treatment facility.

About the Position: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

This position will be located at ATAMMC in the Directorate for Mental Health in the Department of Addictions Residential Treatment Facility.

Basic Requirements for Social Worker (Substance Abuse):Degree: Master's degree (or higher degree) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting social work services to clients and/or patients, providing crisis intervention counseling, and developing treatment plans.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

License: A current, active, valid, and unrestricted independent social work clinical licensure from a U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction is required.

Major Duties:

  • Provides clinical oversight to psychiatry residents and fellows, psychology interns and residents, or social work interns and fellows, to include clinical performance of initial evaluations, safety assessments.
  • Performs case management, to include coordinating follow-up and treatment to assure continuity of patient care, facilitating necessary transfers within facility, and post discharge follow-up and treatment.
  • Provides professional social work services to various beneficiary groups, scattered over a large geographical area, arriving from and discharged to, worldwide locations.
  • Provides direct social work practice in cases with complex problems and substance use.
  • Conducts ongoing review of patient progress and evaluate and modify treatment plans to meet changing needs.
  • Conducts individual, group, and family psychotherapy on primary and secondary illnesses.
  • Provides relapse prevention counseling, crisis intervention counseling, and motivational interviewing strategies.
