Full Job Description

You will serve as a SMALL CRAFT OPERATOR SUPERVISOR in the PORT OPERATIONS, BERTH DAY PORT LOGISTICS DIVISION of NAVAL STATION.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE 1) Planning and assigning the daily work tasks of small boat crews, including operators and deck hands; 2) Overseeing boat crews during normal operations, emergency situations, drills, routine maintenance, and related waterfront activities; 3) Ensuring crews are trained on the proper use of onboard deck and safety equipment; 4) Inspecting equipment to ensure it is always ready for operation.

The work requires long periods of constant standing, walking, bending, and climbing of stairs, scaffolding, and ladders is required.

Work may also include working under pressure several hours at a time. Moderate physical effort and hand/eye coordination are required when operating controls and performing maintenance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work outside in all kinds of weather.

The incumbent works on deck, exposed to sun, wind, spray, and rain during year-round vessel operations in Pearl Harbor Hickam Subject to hot sun, spray, rain, and sleets.

Will be exposed to possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion. Will be exposed to possible strains, cuts, broken bones and bruises.

Will be exposed to organic growths (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) on docks, salt water systems, and other areas exposed to seawater.

Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment, while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments.

Wearing of required safety equipment in designated areas is mandatory, i.e., safety glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, life jackets, etc.

Work is accomplished in offices, piers, and ships, which require wearing of personal safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, safety vest, face masks and earplugs.

The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present.

These agents may include, but are not limited to, fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.

To ensure employee safety and health, the command maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations.

These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance.

SAFETY: Incumbent is responsible for following and enforcing safe work practices, including the use of appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE).

Incumbent is required to perform duties with the highest level of attention to safety and health and will take the initiative to make the work area safe for themselves as well as those around them.

Incumbent is responsible for taking prompt corrective action to abate hazardous workplace conditions.

Incumbent is required to notify his/her supervisor either orally or in writing as soon as possible of items he/she is unable to correct.

  • You will oversee the operation and routine maintenance of small craft to include log broncs, light tugs, barrier boats, utility boats, oil recovery skimmers, and boom platform boats.
  • You will oversee regular and preventative maintenance on the small craft.
  • You will supervise the boat crews to include operators, deckhands, or others as required.
  • You will maintain a log of daily operations and occurrences, submits reports of operation as required.
  • You will identify discrepancies in equipment on small craft which may cause a hazard to personnel or property.
