Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a shipwright at a naval shipyard, where you'll build and repair wooden structures to support ships during construction, drydocking, and maintenance.

Tasks include creating cradles and shoring for vessels, installing decks, and following blueprints to ensure everything is sturdy and precise.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Shipwright Worker located in the Service Shop (Code 990), Production Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900), at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.

- Ability to do the theoretical, precise, and/or artistic work applies to skilled and semi-skilled occupations. - Ability to construct new, one-of-a-kind items. Invent new methods.

- Ability to plan/layout/set up operations. - Ability to Interpret blueprints, sketches, docking worksheets, and job orders to perform the duties of the shipwright trade.

- Ability to utilize written procedures, work methods, and approved work sequences to review completed shipwright work.

  • You will build supporting cradles for drydocking vessels.
  • You will make necessary directed adjustments to bilge and keel blocks by driving packing and wedges and builds any required supplementary shoring
  • You will build various supporting structures for ship while it is under construction.
  • You will construct sled targets from blueprints, makes necessary repairs and dismantles and scraps as required.
  • You will install, repair, and calk wooden decks on ships.
