Full Job Description

You will serve as a SHIPWRIGHT LEADER in the TEMPORARY SERVICES SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Lead Or Supervise Setting up and operating woodworking machines such as timber sizer, resaws, cut off saws, band saws, rip saws, table saws, and drill presses.

Setting up procedures and methods to solve work problems. Equipment surveying and dry dock set up procedures. Ability to know lumber grades and specifications.

Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, and work orders.

  • You will have materials, tools, blueprints, and any other supplies needed to perform work available.
  • You will check work in progress and make sure safety practices and good housekeeping rules are followed.
  • You will answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directions.
  • You will check completed work to ensure supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
