Join the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office as a Supervising Detention Assistant!

Supervising Detention Assistants (SDAs) oversee daily operations within their assigned units, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant facility support.

They supervise civilian staff, including Detention Assistants and Janitors, providing daily performance oversight, managing schedules, and conducting performance evaluations.

SDAs review invoices, track purchases, and support budget documentation. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assigning tasks and special projects as needed
  • Working with vendors to secure appropriate products, equipment, and pricing
  • Ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, including clothing exchanges and monthly inspections
  • Communicating with commissary providers regarding deliveries and discrepancies
  • Collaborating with peers and other units within the department
  • Covering line-level and supervisory overtime as needed


The ideal candidate is adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. Candidates should be effective communicators who work well both independently and as part of a team, and will possess many of the following:

  • Experience in procurement, requisitions, inventory, and expense-tracking
  • Knowledge of janitorial duties, supplies, and equipment

Please note: Supervising Detention Assistants work in a detention facility and are required to undergo a background check, wear a uniform, carry a radio, and may work weekends and holidays.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Supervising Detention Assistant position in the Sheriff's Office.

This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

Requirements

Experience: Any combination of experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein. Normally, one year experience involving coordination of inventory requisition and control, cost recordkeeping, and resolving problems associated with customer service. Supervisory training and/or experience is highly desirable.

Education: The ability to read and write English and make mathematical calculations at a level for successful job performance.

License: Possession of a valid California license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Background Requirement: Candidates certified for employment must be willing to undergo an in-depth background investigation, including a criminal histories check, DMV, fingerprints, a drug and alcohol usage questionnaire and a medical exam. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state, or in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state, or in any jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in California, or are under formal probation may be subject to disqualification for this class.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of: effective supervisory and training principles and procedures; procedures and techniques of requisitioning, receiving, stocking, issuing and delivering supplies and materials; storekeeping and/or laundry operations; safety and security practices and tool/equipment control (preferably in a detention environment).

Some knowledge of: stock control and cost systems.

Ability to: effectively plan, coordinate, and supervise a 24-hour 7-day per week stockkeeping/warehousing operation or laundry; effectively implement and evaluate work programs and procedures; effectively convey oral and written instructions; promote effective working relationships with managers, staff, inmates, and service providers; maintain accurate work records, and prepare reports; lift, bend, stoop, reach and remain standing for extended periods may be required to perform laundry and/or stores activities;

Willingness to: work shifts, weekends, and holidays in a maximum security setting; undergo a background check.

Being part of the Sheriff's Office and being expected to keep the public safe requires a thorough background investigation process.

This process includes an assessment of prior work history, verifying educational experiences, court reports, public records searches, and understanding past patterns relating to drug usage, financial patterns, etc.

This entails gathering a significant amount of information from job candidates and speaking to former employers, friends, family members, etc.

Polygraphs, drug tests, and medical and physical examinations are also part of this process. Candidates must be honest and forthcoming about information that may arise during the background process.

Deception during any portion of this process is grounds for disqualification, even after employment. This process can take anywhere from 3-5 months.

Many factors are taken into consideration and one should not assume a credit issue or prior drug use is automatically disqualifying.
