Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading teams of sergeants, deputies, and support staff to manage the daily operations of an adult detention facility, including handling incidents, ensuring safety, and coordinating with other agencies.

It requires being available around the clock and stepping in for higher leadership when needed.

A good fit would be an experienced internal Sheriff's Office employee with supervisory background in corrections who values teamwork, discipline, and promoting fairness and inclusion.

Key Requirements

  • Current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (limited-duration employees ineligible)
  • Six years or more of full-time experience as a detention deputy, correctional officer, detention/correctional supervisor, or licensed peace officer, including two years supervisory experience; or equivalent education (60 semester credits) plus five years experience with two years supervisory
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain Hennepin County driver's permit
  • Availability for flexible schedule including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on-call duty
  • Knowledge of laws, ordinances, department policies, inmate classification, and jail management principles
  • Ability to supervise staff, maintain discipline and morale, respond to incidents, and testify in court

Full Job Description

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Detention Lieutenant. This position supervises the work of sergeants, deputies, and support staff in the daily operation of the Adult Detention division.
Location and hours:
This position is at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility located at 401 South 4th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, 55415 in downtown Minneapolis. This position requires working a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and requires being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year.

This is a full-time, benefit-earning position.
You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office to apply for this position. Limited-duration employees are not eligible.

In this position, you will:
  • Lead units of the Adult Detention Division or stand-in for the Facility Commander.
  • Prepare or assist in divisional budget and annual reports; work on special project assignments.
  • Supervise the work of supervisors, law enforcement, and detention and support staff assigned to the division; maintain discipline and morale; recommend commendations and disciplinary action.
  • Respond to inmate and security incidents and interview subjects of complaints, witnesses, and complainants; testify in court.
  • Prepare and send communications, instructions, and procedures; review and evaluate reports.
  • Coordinate activities with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Conduct frequent inspections of the jail facility to ensure cleanliness and safe and proper operating conditions.
  • Provide leadership to further department-based strategies that align with county goals, mission and core values for diversity, equity & inclusion.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Six years or more of full-time equivalent experience as a detention deputy, correctional officer, detention or correctional supervisor, or licensed peace officer including two years or more of supervisory experience.
    • Two years or more of college or vocational technical coursework (equivalent of 60 semester credits) and five years or more of the approved work experience, including two years or more of supervisory experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year.

    • Laws and ordinances related to detention functions.
    • Department rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures.
    • Acceptance and release procedures.
    • Inmate classification system.
    • Labor contracts, grievances, and disciplinary procedures.
    • Philosophy, principles, methods, practices, and techniques of jail management.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and interactions.
