Full Job Description
To learn the principles and practices of law enforcement work in the Sheriff's Department; to participate in required training courses; and to perform routine, non-enforcement duties.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the trainee level of the Deputy Sheriff series. Incumbents are expected to attend a basic POST approved police academy, or perform non-enforcement duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is provided by a Sheriff's Sergeant, or other higher level line officer.
Functional or technical supervision may be provided by a Deputy Sheriff II, or a higher level line officer.
Requirements
Participate in all required training programs.Read and study technical and legal materials pertaining to law enforcement procedures and policies.
Participate in written and job skill examinations to demonstrate newly learned skills and knowledge.
Participate in weaponless self-defense training.
Receive and process prisoners.
Guard and escort inmates within the jail and other correctional facilities.
Maintain records of Sheriff's Department equipment and supplies, and the personal property of inmates.
Examine prisoner's mail for contraband.
Answer telephone inquires regarding the status of inmates.
