Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead sheet metal mechanic in the Air Force, where you'll guide and train other workers on repairing and maintaining aircraft metal parts, like fixing dents or replacing rivets.

It's hands-on work in a shop or outdoors, using tools to inspect and build metal structures on planes.

A good fit would be someone with solid experience in metalwork who enjoys leading a team and can work safely in varying conditions.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to lead and train journeymen and non-journeymen sheet metal mechanics without more than normal supervision
  • Knowledge of aircraft sheet metal structures, materials, and equipment for construction, repair, and forging
  • Skill in interpreting blueprints, instructions, specifications, and performing layout and pattern development
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and equipment for metal work, including hammers, snips, saws, brakes, and shears
  • Dexterity in assembly, disassembly, and reassembly of metal components
  • Experience examining aircraft for defects like cracks, dents, and loose rivets
  • Commitment to safety practices, including wearing protective gear and maintaining a clean work environment

The primary purpose of this position is to ??????serve as a work leader, to provide training, certification and knowledge of Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic working directly with journeymen and non journeymen performing all tasks assigned to an Aircraft sheet metal mechanic.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 Metal Work Family.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of equipment, structure, materials, etc.

(includes constructing, repair, and forging) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc.

(includes blueprint reading) Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation) Ability to use hand tools, power tools, etc.

for Metal Work Dexterity (Assembly, Disassembly, Reassembly, etc.) PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside and is subjected to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and a variety of weather conditions.

Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Required to wear safety glasses when performing eye hazardous operations. Major Duties:

Provides guidance and passes on to others instructions received from supervisor and gets works started.

Examines aircraft sheet metal structures to locate cracks, breaks, holes, bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets. Uses and maintains tools.

Use basic hand and power tools, such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, brakes and stakes.

Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
