Job Description

Summary

This job is for a Sergeant position on the Agency Search Team in a South Carolina correctional facility, where you'll help run searches for contraband among inmates, staff, and visitors, while assisting with training team members and handling administrative tasks.

  • Knowledge of contraband logging, chain of custody, and disciplinary procedures
  • Ability to work flexible schedules and be available for emergency recalls
  • Familiarity with policies on searches, property control, and visitation

Full Job Description

  • Assist the Lieutenant in administering the operation of the Agency Search Team.
  • Conduct routine, unannounced, and/or pre-scheduled searches/shakedowns of inmates, staff, and visitors within the confines of correctional facility living areas and/or grounds.
  • Assist the Lieutenant in overseeing the selection and training of all corporal and correctional officer team members.
  • Be knowledgeable of the logging and accountability process of contraband items i.e.,
  • Chain of custody and disciplinary procedures.
  • Be available for recall to assist in emergency and non-emergency situations that require additional personnel.
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule in order to work various time frames.
  • Review and comment on all incident reports before they are submitted to the Lieutenant.
  • Perform and submit all administrative duties to include leave and attendance, etc.
  • Remain thoroughly familiar with all policies governing searches, property and contraband control, visitation, etc.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.

  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.

  • Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
