This role involves overseeing security staff and managing inmates in a correctional facility, ensuring safety, conducting inspections, and stepping in for higher supervisors when needed.
It's a leadership position focused on maintaining order and standards in a prison setting.
A good fit would be someone with prior experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement who is reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable in high-stress environments.
Under the supervision of the housing lieutenant, is responsible for the overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit, and the supervision, custody and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
Supervises job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.
Assists in conducting briefings with officers at the beginning of shift.
Keeps subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
Makes random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
Make routine inspections of work areas and all security devices and equipment to ensure duty performance standards are met and that all devices, doors, and equipment are in proper working order.
Assists in conducting counts.
Investigates complaints.
Performs duties of the housing lieutenant in his absence.
Maintains OSHA and safety standards.
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements
A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
