Job Description

Summary

Seattle Public Utilities has multiple opportunities for experienced Senior Water Pipe Workers.

These positions provide leadership to Water Pipe Workers and apprentices in the Water Operations and System Maintenance Division. The successful candidates will report to Water Pipe Crew Chiefs.

The Water Operations & System Maintenance Division has four different reporting locations spread throughout Seattle and King County.

You may be assigned to work at any one of these four reporting locations: Lake Youngs (16205 SE Old Petrovitsky Rd, Renton), Tolt (13510 Carnation-Duvall Rd, Duvall), North Operations Center (1318 N 128th St, Seattle), Operations Control Center (2700 Airport Way S, Seattle).

Requirements

  • Meets with Crew Chief to receive assignments, discuss job options and strategies, visit job sites and plans scope of work prior to the start of work.
  • Receives new work, fills out work orders, sends completed work orders and records work details applying automated wireless, handheld and workstation devices along with various software programs.
  • Ensures the safe operations of variety of equipment including service trucks, dump trucks, hydro-lifts, truck mounted cranes, backhoes, dozers, graders and tractor mowers, water tapping machines, pipe cutters, valve machine, welding devices and hand tools.

    Inspects service trucks for proper operation and needed maintenance.

  • Reads and interprets construction and design blueprints to determine correct location and grade for all installations and possible obstructions or conflicts that could change work plans.
  • Explains City standard plans on installation and repair of water transmission and distribution systems and impacts to customers and public as needed.
  • Instructs crews on materials required and work expectations regarding work practices and production requirements.
  • Directs, coaches, trains and mentors Water Pipe Workers, Water Pipe Worker Apprentices and temporary employees.
  • Assists in the development and drafts curriculum as well as teaches classes for the apprenticeship program, new employees.
  • Conducts monthly evaluations.
  • Directs Construction Maintenance and Equipment Operators (CMEO) and Senior CMEO’s, Truck Drivers, Heavy Truck Drivers, temporary and contracted employees.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • One (1) year journey-level experience in water system utility construction, maintenance, and repair of distribution and/or transmission systems and related facilities AND
  • Completion of Seattle Public Utilities’ two-year Water Pipe Worker Apprenticeship Program or closely related apprenticeship program; OR
  • Two (2) years of experience in pipe-fitting trade or pipe-fitting experience in the water works construction, maintenance and repair AND
  • One (1) year journey-level experience in municipal water utility construction, maintenance and repair.

Experience and Education Equivalency: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class will be considered.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Must possess current Washington State Commercial Driver’s License CDL Class B License.
  • Must possess and maintain Washington State Department of Health Water Distribution Manager II Certification (WDMII) through continuing education unit requirements.

You will be most successful in this role if you possess one or more of the following:

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to provide excellent customer service skills to internal and external customers. Inform residents of area in order to coordinate repairs and installations.
  • Knowledge of various computer programs including Maximo, Outlook and Datasplice.
  • Ability to utilize leadership skills to resolve crew conflicts in the field, enforce City policies, and resolve customer complaints and concerns in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work with people from diverse professional, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and a desire to learn new skills.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Must be able to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as part of a rotational shift.

Willingness to participate in voluntary weekly standby rotation to ensure adequate staff coverage to handle emergency events involving the water distribution system during off- hours.

This work is in person and hybrid work is not an option.

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and emergencies, around heavy equipment. High pressure water systems and tools, exposed to traffic, chemical fumes, contaminated soil and loud noise from equipment, trucks, and turbines.
  • Digging, bending, stooping and lifting objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs. are required.
  • Good attendance is required. Must be willing to work out any of the four Water Operations facilities.
