Summary

This senior therapist role in rehabilitation services involves providing expert assessment and treatment for speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive issues in patients from newborns to adults, both in hospitals and outpatient clinics.

It also includes mentoring staff, coordinating daily operations, collaborating with doctors and other healthcare teams, and ensuring smooth workflow in the department.

Must be licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist, Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist

The Rehabilitation Services - Speech Language Pathology department provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for Neonate to adult population in both in-patient and out-patient settings.

The position will be delivering assessment and treatment of swallowing, speech, language and cognitive deficits and work with all populations.

The position works daily with nursing, case management, social work, radiology dept. physicians, and other rehab disciplines.

The position will coordinate daily operations of the speech and rehab departments, communicating with other disciplines and being the liaison between Speech/rehab and physicians.

The position will also conduct training of new and incoming staff, mentoring, verify competencies, direct patient care and other duties as assigned.

This position will work a 5/40 schedule from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Assist with complex patient cases, including medically fragile, high-risk, or multi-system diagnoses

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team

Assist the department with organizationSupport departmental operations through coordination of staff organization, scheduling, and daily workflow to promote efficiency

Plan, administer and guide therapy treatments for cases of physically handicapped children.

Works as a member of the interdisciplinary team, confers with the physician, patient and family to set functional goals.

Provides patient and family education/home program activities to assist in activity of daily living skills designed to promote improved mental and physical health.

Initiates and maintains records of patients’ status and progress. Provides clinical instruction to occupational or physical therapy students.

Assists in the guidance and mentoring of a staff of occupational or physical therapists assigned to a Medical Therapy Unit in a public school; as requested or assigned, gives technical advice to staff therapists.

Provide training to the Medical Therapy Unit staff as needed to ensure implementation of best practices in the Medical Therapy Unit and share these best practices with other staff.

Participate in program development workgroups or projects as assigned.

Complete 10% client case reviews for their respective Medical Therapy Unit’s monthly to promote quality assurance and quality improvement measures in providing client care.

Assists in the operation of Pediatric and Orthopedic Conferences; assists in the training and evaluation of professional students; assists as a liaison between a Medical Therapy Unit, school personnel, and other community agencies in the absence of the supervising therapist.

Assists the Medical Therapy Unit Supervisor in the reviewing Occupational and Physical therapy evaluations and Durable Medical Equipment requests.

May represent the Medical Therapy Program in Special Care Clinics for enhanced care coordination for the Medical Therapy Program clients.

Qualifications

Experience: Two years as a licensed occupational therapist, Speech Language Pathologist or a licensed physical therapist. For assignments in a California Children’s Services setting, one year of the required experience must have been in pediatrics.

Knowledge of: Therapeutic techniques, activities and equipment used in occupational or physical therapy work with particular emphasis on the physical and psychological problems of children with cerebral palsy; growth and development of children; skeletal anatomy; kinesiology, neurology and the objectives of occupational or physical therapy treatment.

Ability to: Plan, organize and conduct an occupational or physical therapy program; apply occupational or physical therapy techniques in observing testing and evaluating patients; explain occupational or physical therapy treatments to physically handicapped children; deal effectively with handicapped children and their parents; prepare reports and keep records of case histories; assist in coordinating and directing a medical therapy unit instruction program.

Other Requirements

License: Current licensure as an Occupational Therapist with the California Board of Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathologist with the California Board of Speech-Language Pathology or as a licensed Physical Therapist with the California Board of Physical Therapy (a physical therapist applicant lacking California licensure may be temporarily employed subject to the requirements of the California Board of Physical Therapy).
