Summary

This role supports the Houston Police Department's K9 Unit by caring for police dogs, maintaining their living areas, and helping with training and administrative tasks at the IAH Airport division.

It involves hands-on animal care, record-keeping, and coordination of veterinary services in a law enforcement setting.

A good fit would be someone with experience in animal handling or law enforcement support who is reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable with physical tasks like cleaning and light lifting.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs para-professional police and support activities to assist in traffic/accident management, airports and homicide/family violence divisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for K9s including feeding, watering, cleaning kennels, and monitoring overall health and behavior.
  • Maintain a clean and safe kennel environment, including disinfecting kennels, equipment, and training areas.
  • Assist K9 handlers with preparation for training, including setting up training aids and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records such as training logs, veterinary records, and inventory.
  • Schedule and coordinate veterinary appointments and maintain vaccination documentation.
  • Assist with scheduling of Canine team sweeps.
  • Perform general administrative support for the K9 Unit as assigned.
  • All duties and responsibilities may not be included in the above job descriptions.


WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a High School Diploma or a GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One (1) year of related work experience is required, preferably in a law enforcement agency.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
