Workday/Schedule: 6:30 am - 3:00 pm Monday-Friday; some evenings/weekends required

Position is responsible for professional level work dedicated to the maintenance and repair of park properties, trails, fields, facilities, and amenities through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. This includes but is not limited to the operation of equipment in support of construction, maintenance, and/or park facility and trail projects in the City's park system. This is accomplished by receiving and taking appropriate directions on written and verbal instructions; and following instructions to effectively complete assigned tasks. Primary responsibilities include repairing, replacing, and maintenance of park facilities, amenities and park trails, basic carpentry skills, operating and maintaining park maintenance equipment (blowers, weed eaters, commercial mowing equipment including zero turn mowers, tractors, packer trucks, carpentry tools, masonry, landscape construction, etc.). Employee will be required to use a City issued smart phone and asset management software (Cityworks) to document needed and completed work. Employee must be reliable and punctual (ability to work assigned schedule).
Responsible for leading a crew, to include assigning and inspecting work; performing cleaning services; performing technical work, service checks, and preventative maintenance on electronic equipment and vehicles; administering and scheduling repairs; operating light-duty equipment and power tools; installing and maintaining equipment and related devices; picking up trash; maintaining supplies; taking inventory and stocking equipment; researching information; preparing routine reports; maintaining records and databases; and performing related duties.
Requirements
- Serve as lead worker on a crew responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair, and replacement of park trails, amenities, and facilities.
- Assign tasks and inspect work related to trail and grounds maintenance, landscaping, carpentry, custodial services, and small-scale construction projects.
- Conduct routine inspections of parks and trails to ensure safety, cleanliness, and functionality; document the condition of trails, parks, and amenities.
- Maintain trail systems, including asphalt and natural surfaces, landscaped areas, tree and shrub care, mowing grass, trimming weeds, and applying fertilizers and chemicals.
- Perform seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, snow and ice treatment, and debris clean-up.
- Safely apply herbicides and other chemical treatments using sprayers and spreaders.
- Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on small engines, landscaping tools, and related equipment.
- Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies; ensure accurate records and documentation.
- Utilize a City-issued smartphone and asset management system (CityWorks) to document needed and completed work, track work orders, inspections, and service requests.
- Provide excellent customer service; respond to questions, address concerns, and escalate issues as necessary.
- Safely operate a variety of commercial landscaping and maintenance equipment, including blowers, weed eaters, zero-turn mowers, tractors, packer trucks, and more.
- Drive work trucks with trailers to and between job sites; ensure proper loading and secure transport of equipment and materials.
- Maintain a reliable and punctual work schedule, including availability for flexible shifts as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall park operations and maintenance.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
- Three years of equipment operation/driving or specialized maintenance experience based on assignment.
- A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
Additional Information

- Willingness and availability to work non-standard hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, rotating/flexible shifts, and during inclement weather.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions, understand simple processes, and operate basic machinery.

- Experience maintaining natural and paved trails within a municipal park system.
- Experience operating zero turn riding mowers (commercial landscaping equipment).
- Experience in turf management and improvement.
- Experience with skilled trades.
- NC Pesticide license.
