Job Description

Summary

This job involves installing, calibrating, maintaining, and repairing instruments and equipment used in wastewater treatment, such as chemical pumps, flow meters, and analyzers, to ensure smooth operations in a city water facility.

Workers will also inspect equipment, keep detailed records of repairs and parts, and handle physically demanding tasks in varying weather and chemical environments.

It's a good fit for someone with hands-on technical training and at least one year of experience in instrument repair who is comfortable with outdoor, strenuous work and emergency response duties.

Key Requirements

  • Specialized vocational training (up to 18 months beyond high school) in mechanical or electronic equipment operation
  • One year of experience in repairing, calibrating, and installing instruments and equipment
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 80 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in awkward positions
  • Tolerance for exposure to heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, and minor chemical or physical hazards

  • Availability for Monday-Friday schedule (7:30am-4:00pm), subject to change, in an emergency management role (Tier I)

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Installs, calibrates, maintains and repairs various disinfection and de-chlorination instruments, equipment, chemical lines, switch-over valves, flow meters, level meters controllers, analyzers, chart recorders chemical pumps or other instrumentation depending upon the operational program of the department. Inspects, tests and evaluates instruments and equipment for proper operation or faulty maintenance. Maintains records of work orders, incoming/outgoing parts and equipment and parts and equipment requisitions and pricing. Performs other technical repairs, installations, maintenance, as directed; may perform some nontechnical assignments.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One (1) year of experience in the repair, calibration and installation of instruments and equipment is required

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None.
