Summary

This job involves leading and overseeing teams of janitors in a large county health system, making sure cleaning tasks are done well and safely in hospitals and clinics.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in cleaning supervision who is organized, pays attention to details, and can handle reports and inventory in a busy healthcare setting.

Key Requirements

  • Three years of experience in janitorial or custodial work, including at least one year in a supervisory role

In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a meaningful role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

THE TEAM MEMBER WE ARE SEARCHING FOR:
Supervises the work of janitorial crews.

Requirements

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITES OF A SENIOR CUSTODIAN SUPERVISOR:
Assigns, instructs, and supervises lower-level supervisors and workers, and inspects work performed.

Ensures that safe work practices are observed.

Maintains records and makes reports.

Monitors contract janitorial services.

Investigates and resolves service complaints.

Reports building conditions requiring repair or maintenance.

Ensures an adequate inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment is stocked and distributed to cleaning crews.

Ensures cleaning equipment is properly maintained; identifies worn out or damaged equipment for salvage.

Occasionally performs the work of a custodian.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

Provides task direction and oversight to volunteers, inmates, and community service workers performing janitorial duties.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

Option I:Two (2) years of experience as a Custodian Working Supervisor* or higher supervising workers performing cleaning duties in institutions**, office buildings or commercial buildings.


Option II:Three (3) years of experience supervising workers performing cleaning duties in institutions*, office buildings or commercial buildings.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS III – MODERATE:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Additional points will be awarded for additional experience beyond the selection requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Experience at the level of Custodian Working Supervisor is defined as supervises and participates in the work of a janitorial crew.

**Institutional facilities are defined as hospitals, health centers, juvenile detention centers, jails, prisons, or residential care facilities.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.
Additional points will be awarded for additional experience beyond the selection requirements.


The passing score for the assessment is 70%

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:

Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the eligible register accordingly.

Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a register in the order of their score group for a period of (12) months. The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
