About the Division: Seattle Parks and Facilities Maintenance Division performs maintenance at over 25 miles of boulevards, 465 parks, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small-craft centers, 4 golf courses, and an outdoor stadium.

We place strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients, and staff to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.


Position Description: Seattle Parks and Recreation is seeking a skilled Senior Carpenter to join our Facilities Maintenance team.

This lead-level position is responsible for performing journey-level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of Parks-owned buildings and structures, including community centers, swimming pools, comfort stations, docks, picnic shelters, and other park facilities.


As a Senior Carpenter, you will lead and coordinate the work of carpenters and helpers, plan and assign projects, and ensure quality craftsmanship across a wide range of carpentry tasks.

This role combines hands-on expertise in both rough and finish carpentry with crew leadership, requiring familiarity with City building codes and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and work orders.

Senior Carpenters also assist in the design and development of new construction plans, collaborate with other trades and facility occupants, and play a key role in maintaining the safety and functionality of Seattle’s public spaces.

This position is represented by the SW MS Regional Council of Carpenters.


We are currently recruiting for one (1) regular, benefited position on the Day Shift between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on a 4-day, 10-hour shift.

Requirements

  • Lead and coordinate the work of carpenters, helpers, and laborers on a variety of projects.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to apprentices, supporting skill development and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Perform journey-level carpentry construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of park facilities and structures, including roofs, docks, bridges, doors, windows, hardware, furniture, cabinets, kiosks, signage, ballfield equipment, and other fixtures.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, specifications, and written instructions; prepare sketches, layouts, and cost estimates for labor and materials.
  • Ensure compliance with City building codes, ordinances, and departmental policies.
  • Assist in the design and development of plans for new construction and facility remodeling projects.
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs; conduct periodic inspections to identify and verify repair and maintenance needs.
  • Issue work instructions, inspect job activities in progress and upon completion, and maintain records of job time, materials, and labor costs.
  • Estimate, requisition, order, and maintain inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Collaborate with other trades, vendors, contractors, crews, and facility occupants to plan and coordinate work activities.
  • Provide clear communication both verbally and in writing; prepare required reports and maintain routine work records.
  • Perform related duties of a comparable level and type as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires completion of an accepted carpentry apprenticeship program and two years as a journey-level carpenter, or equivalent experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • May work near heavy equipment.
  • May work near energized equipment.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of journey-level carpentry experience, including both rough and finish work, performing construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings, structures, and fixtures.
  • At least two years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, specifications, and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, and their proper usage.
  • Proven experience leading crews of carpenters and laborers, including coordinating multiple tasks across different locations and conflicting priorities.
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle building codes, ordinances, and safety regulations.
  • Experience assigning work, inspecting completed projects, and mentoring apprentices.
  • Demonstrated ability to estimate time and materials, and coordinate labor and materials to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently under work orders and complete assignments within established guidelines.
  • Experience coordinating work with other trades, crews, and facility occupants.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and build a productive team in a diverse workforce.
  • Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.
  • Skilled in the use of carpentry tools, equipment, and materials, with the ability to adapt methods to diverse projects.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs and facility inspections.
  • Ability to prepare cost estimates, sketches, and layouts for proposed projects.
  • Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
  • Familiarity with software packages such as MS Outlook, Word, Excel, or similar applications.
  • Experience using work order/asset management systems for record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
  • Experience managing inventory, ordering supplies, and coordinating with vendors.
  • High level of proficiency in verbal communication to convey information effectively and professionally.
  • Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.

Additional Information

All approved candidates for this position will be required to perform written tests as a portion of the hiring process.


Compensation:

This position is part of a 2-Step Compensation program; The full salary range for this position is $51.12 (Step 1) – $53.29 (Step 2) hourly.


Union Information:

This position is represented by SW MS Regional Council of Carpenters (CBA) and is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
