Full Job Description

This position serves as the Security Assistant for Police Service within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), located at VA Clinic in South Charlotte, North Carolina, with a primary purpose to monitor physical security equipment and systems.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/09/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:GS-5 Grade Requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Security Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position.

Specialized experience includes: the use of various computer, automation systems; computer skills in terms of data entry, compiling information, preparing and submitting reports, and database maintenance and management; maintaining confidentiality of information, both electronic and print; and communication and interpersonal relation skills sufficient to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers both verbally and in writing.

NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

-OR-EDUCATION: Have successfully completed (4) years of education above the high school level.

This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application.

Education cannot be credited without documentation.

-OR-COMBINATION: Possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Major Duties:

This position serves as the Security Assistant - Dispatcher for Police Service within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with a primary purpose to monitor physical security equipment and systems.

Major duties and responsibilities include: Major duties and responsibilities include: Physical security, controlling facility or physical access to information technology, and/or controlled access to arms, ammunitions, or explosives, but not to the extent that there is an impact on national security Protection of personal, private, controlled unclassified, or proprietary information-with the potential to damage the public's trust (includes access to or processing of personal information such as that protected by the Privacy Act (PA) of 1974, exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), financial data, or privileged information involving the award of contracts, contractor proprietary information, etc.) Work requires, in addition to general administrative and/or clerical skills, practical knowledge of specific security or law enforcement objectives, programs, methods, and procedures, and skills in carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration.

The position has practical knowledge of the mission and objectives of Police Services, physical security systems, and procedures to support operations and the work of other staff.

Knowledge of VA and VHA policies and procedures related to security procedures. Knowledge to execute administrative tasks that support police security related responsibilities.

Knowledge to monitor and respond to physical alarm systems and security cameras to include troubleshooting basic equipment problems to dispatching Officers in response to potentially more significant issues.

The position demonstrates broad working knowledge of how the various alarm systems operate and interconnect with the overall VAMC physical security monitoring system to identify and resolve security risks.

The position has extensive knowledge of VA and facility physical security standard operating procedures and practices to monitor the different alarms, determine possible causes of the alarm and initiate a response from a range of options Government service delivery, including customer service or public liaison duties Work Schedule: Various/Panama Schedule-Varies depending on the needs of the Service Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
