Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves driving and maintaining heavy trucks and specialized vehicles like tractor-trailers and vacuum pumpers in the rugged terrain of Denali National Park in Alaska, helping with facilities operations and road maintenance from April to October.

It's ideal for someone with strong driving experience in tough conditions who knows the local Alaskan environment and can work independently outdoors.

Key Requirements

  • Current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements and no air brake restrictions
  • Current medical examiner's certificate with no disqualifying offenses
  • Local knowledge of Denali National Park and Preserve resources, conditions, and nearby areas (e.g., Healy, Talkeetna)
  • Experience living or working in or near Denali National Park duty stations
  • Ability to operate heavy vehicles (GVWR over 32,000 lbs) on steep, mountainous terrain safely
  • Competence in vehicle maintenance, safe driving practices, and interpreting equipment instructions
  • Availability for seasonal work April-October 2026, up to 1560 hours

SELECTIVE FACTOR: You must possess and maintain a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements, no air brake restrictions, a current medical examiner's certificate, and no disqualifying offenses prior to the anticipated entrance on duty date.

If you have a current, valid Class A CDL showing you have tanker endorsements and no air brake restrictions, you must upload a copy with your application package.

(Ensure you upload the front AND back of your CDL.) If you already have a current medical examiner's certificate showing no pending disqualifying offenses, it must be uploaded at the time of application.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Denali National Park and Preserve, Toklat, and Wonder Lake duty stations include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision.

Ability to operate motor vehicles. Ability to use proper work practices, including keeping things neat, clean, and in order. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.

The typical season for this position is April - October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

If selected, you will work as a Motor Vehicle Operator, WG-5703-08, at Denali National Park and Preserve for the Facilities Operations or Roads Team.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operates and maintains a variety of single-motor vehicles including light-, medium-, and heavy-weight trucks, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) up to and more than 32,000 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds on steep and varied mountainous terrain.

Vehicles primarily include tractor trailer and dump trucks (some with dual transmissions). Facilities Operations Motor Vehicle Operator will operate a vacuum pumper truck.
