Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves leading a team of workers, young volunteers, and others to maintain trails, airstrips, cabins, and camping spots in a remote national park in Alaska.

It requires hands-on experience with tools, equipment, and outdoor work in rugged conditions, while ensuring safety and completing reports.

A good fit would be someone with local knowledge of the area, leadership skills, and a passion for preserving natural resources who enjoys seasonal outdoor labor.

Key Requirements

  • Special knowledge or expertise in the park's natural and/or cultural resources and their management
  • Local knowledge of resources and conditions in or near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (e.g., lived or worked in areas like Chitina, Glennallen, or Tok)
  • Ability to lead and direct a trail crew, including WG-3/5/7 workers, YCC members, and volunteers with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and maintenance
  • Proficiency in technical practices, using measuring instruments, and interpreting instructions, specifications, blueprints, and drawings
  • Ability to safely use, maintain, and operate tools, vehicles, and equipment while following safety protocols
  • Experience planning daily work schedules, managing materials, and completing safety, risk, and performance reports

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker Leader, WL-4749-07 without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Knowledge of Technical Practices. Knowledge of the use of Measuring Instruments.

Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, including blueprints, etc. Ability to Safely Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Knowledge of Materials. Major Duties:

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Leads and directs trail crew, (WG-3s, WG-5s, and WG-7s), YCC crew members and volunteers in maintenance of backcountry assets such as trails, airstrips, cabins, and camping areas.

Leads a crew in operating and maintaining vehicles, tools and equipment. Independently plans and leads a crew in completing work using drawings, specifications, work orders, etc.

consults with supervisor with recommendations on proper material use and qualities.

Plans daily work schedules based on instructions, drawings, manuals and other documentation, following safety protocols at all times.

Completes safety, risk management, employee performance/conduct, and other project reporting requirements on a regular basis. Please visit find a park for additional park information.
