Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves operating and maintaining heavy machinery like bulldozers and loaders to build and repair roads and trails in Denali National Park, Alaska, during the summer months from May to September.

It's a temporary role limited to about 1039 hours, perfect for someone with hands-on experience in construction equipment who enjoys working outdoors in rugged, remote areas.

A good fit would be a local resident or someone familiar with Alaska's terrain, ready for physically demanding work that might include odd hours and manual tasks.

Key Requirements

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and combination vehicle endorsements
  • Current medical examiner's certificate with no disqualifying offenses
  • Local knowledge of Denali National Park and Preserve resources and conditions, including living or working experience in or near specified Alaska areas (e.g., Healy, Talkeetna)
  • Ability to operate heavy engineering equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, graders, excavators, and dump trucks on varied mountainous terrain
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and interpret instructions safely
  • Willingness to perform manual labor, including installing culverts or road features, and work odd hours including nights or early mornings
  • Temporary seasonal commitment not exceeding 1039 hours, starting May 2026

This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 01/16/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

To qualify for this position, you must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and combination vehicle endorsements, at the time of application.

A current medical examiner's certificate with no disqualifying offenses is required by the anticipated entrance-on-duty listed in this announcement.

You must submit a copy of your CDL that includes airbrake and combination vehicle endorsements, when you apply. Ensure you upload the front and back of your CDL.

If selected, you must submit the medical examiner's certificate before entrance-on-duty. Do NOT include photographs.

(SCREEN OUT) -AND- ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

-AND- To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration. The area of consideration can be found in the below paragraph.

Areas considered "near" Denali National Park and Preserve, Toklat, and Wonder Lake duty stations include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies.

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to operate a variety of motor vehicles including graders, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and excavators.

Ability to keep work materials neat, clean, and in order. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Ability to operate safely. Major Duties:

The typical season for this position is May through September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.

If selected, you will work as an Engineering Equipment Operator, WG-5716-08 or WG-5716-10, for the Roads team at Denali National Park and Preserve.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: WG-5716-08: Operates and maintains a variety of heavy engineering equipment including bulldozers, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, dump trucks, tractor, and trailers with a GVWR up to or exceeding 50,000 lbs.
