This seasonal job with the National Park Service involves working in a remote national monument in Maine to monitor wildlife, conduct field surveys, and help protect animal populations during the warmer months.
It's hands-on outdoor work that requires hiking and using basic scientific tools to track animals and report findings.

These positions are located in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, in the Resource Management Division.
The typical seasonal period for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is May-October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2026. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/12/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.
To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).
If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
This experience includes activities such as: 1) Assisting with the performance of wildlife inventories; 2) Monitoring and protection activities for a variety of wildlife species; 3) Conducting field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics using established protocols and standard scientific equipment.
You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of progressively higher-level undergraduate coursework leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.
-OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.
To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent).
Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
This experience includes activities such as: 1) Performing of wildlife inventories; 2) Monitoring wildlife species and protection activities; 3)Conducting field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence utilizing established protocols and standard scientific equipment; 4) Establishing biological techniques and methods for the research and conservation of wildlife and habitats; 5) Developing field reports and presenting information on wildlife management.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:
Implements established natural resource management projects using appropriate resource management equipment. Follows instructions and standardized procedures to collects and organizes field data.
Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determinations.
Assists in the preparation of reports which may include literature research, descriptions of methods, preparation of graphs and charts, and summary of findings.
Salary range at the GS-5 level: $19.33 - $25.12 per hour Salary range at the GS-6 level: $21.54 - $28.00 per hour
