Summary

This job involves leading a team of safety experts at NASA's research center in California to manage safety programs for buildings, construction projects, and daily operations, ensuring everything runs smoothly without accidents.

Key Requirements

Full Job Description

As a Supervisory Institutional Safety Branch Chief, you will oversee a portfolio of institutional safety programs supporting facilities, construction, and operational activities.

You will lead a team of safety professionals, strengthening safety culture, integrating safety into mission operations, and advancing institutional risk management to support safe and effective mission outcomes.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Developing or implementing occupational safety programs supporting facilities, industrial operations, construction activities, or other operational environments; Evaluating workplace hazards, determining risk mitigation actions, and coordinating with operational or engineering organizations to implement safety controls; Leading or overseeing personnel involved in safety programs, inspections, compliance activities, or risk management initiatives.

  • Leads institutional safety programs supporting facilities, construction, and operational activities, ensuring hazards are identified, risks are mitigated, and safety requirements enable safe mission execution.
  • Supervises safety professionals by setting program priorities, assigning work, evaluating performance, and supporting employee development across multiple institutional safety programs.
  • Directs development and implementation of institutional safety policies, procedures, and oversight processes aligned with NASA policy and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations.
  • Partners with engineering, operations, facilities, and program organizations to integrate safety into planning and execution of mission and institutional activities.
  • Leads initiatives to strengthen safety culture by driving hazard reporting, embedding lessons learned from mishaps, and mobilizing the workforce and leadership in proactive risk identification and prevention.
  • Oversees institutional safety program assessments, inspections, and corrective action tracking to improve hazard identification and reduce risk across Center operations.
  • Advises Center leadership on institutional safety risks, regulatory requirements, and safety program effectiveness affecting facilities and operational activities.
  • Supports mishap response and investigation activities, ensuring corrective actions are evaluated and implemented to strengthen prevention programs.
  • Perform a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees.
