Job Description

Summary

This job involves traveling to rural Alaska communities to inspect, test, and manage the construction of power plants, electrical lines, and fuel storage systems, while also training local operators on how to maintain them.

It's a hands-on role with the Alaska Energy Authority, focusing on both traditional diesel power and renewable sources like hydro and wind.

A good fit would be someone with practical electrical experience who enjoys fieldwork, problem-solving in remote areas, and helping remote communities stay powered.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Several years of electrical journeyman, lineman apprenticeship, or electrical power and control education
  • State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness as an Electrical Journeyman or Journeyman Power Lineman (preferred)
  • Strong background in electrical systems, controls, and networking for rural power generation and distribution
  • Practical and theoretical experience with rural Alaska energy infrastructure (preferred)
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight trips in small airplanes throughout the state

RURAL ELECTRIC UTILITY WORKER

Our Rural Electric Utility Worker provides technical assistance to operators and managers of energy infrastructure in rural Alaska. Types of facilities include: prime power diesel and alternative (hydro, wind photovoltaic) power generation; inside and outside power distribution; and bulk fuel storage facilities and pipelines. This position will assist in the inspection, testing, commissioning, and construction management of both power and liquid fuel infrastructure. It will also provide technical operations and maintenance training to rural facility operators via electronic, telephonic and in person.

We’re looking for someone who has a high school diploma or equivalent, and at least several years of electrical journeyman or lineman apprenticeship or electrical power and control education. State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness as an Electrical Journeyman or Journeyman Power Lineman with practical and theoretical experience with rural Alaska energy infrastructure is preferred. The applicant should have a strong background in the electrical systems, controls, and networking used in rural Alaska power generation and distribution. This position requires frequent traveling and overnight trips in communities in small airplanes throughout the State.
