This job is a four-year training program for new civil engineering graduates to gain hands-on experience in designing, inspecting, and maintaining bridges and other structures for Utah's transportation system.
You'll rotate through different tasks like creating designs, analyzing loads, and supporting construction projects, all under the guidance of experienced engineers.
It's ideal for recent or soon-to-graduate civil engineers eager to build practical skills in a team setting without needing prior professional experience.

Are you a recent graduate or are you within one year of graduating from a Civil Engineering program?
Are you looking for an opportunity to learn different areas of transportation engineering from a bridges and structures perspective?
If so, the Utah Department of Transportation's Engineering Rotational Program is for you. This is a four-year program for non-licensed engineers with limited engineering experience.
During your rotation with the Structures Division, you will learn how to apply structural engineering and detailing techniques to a variety of areas related to bridges and structures including design, preservation, asset management, and construction inspection.
As a rotational engineer, you will perform assignments under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer. Tasks may include structural design of bridges, walls and other miscellaneous structures, structural detailing using specialized software (MicroStation, Mathcad, or various concrete and steel design or analysis programs), CADD plan production, bridge inspection, structural load rating calculations, geometric layout and bridge type studies as well as on-site field work such as bridge inspection and construction support.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to gather, organize, and interpret data.
Technically oriented with the rudimentary thought process to visualize constructs in 3-dimensional space.
Effective communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Foundational understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.
Willingness to collaborate across other disciplines (bridge inspection, roadway design, hydraulic analysis, stream restoration, planning, construction services, environmental).
Ability to work independently and as part of a team on a wide variety of projects.
