The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County.

We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.

If you are looking for a new career that will directly benefit the population of LA County, this may be the opportunity for you.The Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Road Maintenance Superintendent vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance.

This assessment will be weighted 100%.Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Road Maintenance Superintendent.

Requirements

A Road Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for a combination of the following job functions:

  • Supervises, plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of operational services maintenance and construction crews engaged in painting lane striping and roadway markings; constructing, repairing, posting traffic signs; and constructing, repairing, and installing raised pavement markers and delineators; and other traffic painting and sign posting maintenance and construction activities.
  • Inspects roads to determine areas in need of repair or improvements, the nature of the needed repairs, and their priority.
  • Notifies administration of any conditions which might endanger public safety, including storm or flood damages or hazards, excavations, fallen trees, or other emergency conditions, and directs staff of corrective action to be taken.
  • Prepares or assist in preparing cost estimates for proposed jobs.
  • Supervises the operation of an operational services division maintenance yard, including the receiving, use and storing of materials, supplies, tools and equipment, and the maintenance and repair of such items.
  • Coordinates construction activities with other agencies, private organizations, or the public, including the United States Forest Service, utility companies and affected property owners.
  • Has responsibility for the maintenance of cost, inventory and time records, and the enforcement of safety regulations and department policy, rules and regulations.
  • Recommends item to be included in the annual budget.
  • Represents the Department of Public Works to citizens on issues concerning interpreting relevant laws and ordinances and resolving complaints; contacts property owners, public utilities employees, private construction firms, governmental units and civic groups to secure cooperation on traffic painting and sign posting maintenance matters of present and future concerns.
  • Utilizes computer hardware and software applications for the preparation of work reports, planning and scheduling work, and for inventory purposes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two years' experience assisting in the supervision of crews engaged in road or bridge maintenance and/or construction activities at the level of Road Maintenance Supervisor*, Bridge Maintenance Supervisor**, or higher.


LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must provide verification of their driver license and a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

You MUST meet the requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class 3 - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Experience at the level of a Road Maintenance Supervisor in the service of County of Los Angeles is defined as: Assists in the direction and supervision of crews in road maintenance and construction activities.
