This job involves leading a team of technicians who handle retirement benefits and accounts for public school employees in Pennsylvania, including tasks like overseeing daily operations, training staff, and solving problems related to member services.
A good fit would be someone with experience in pensions or similar fields who enjoys supervising people, analyzing data, and adapting to changing priorities while providing clear guidance to their team.
The Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS) is currently looking to fill a Retirement Technician Supervisor position within the Agency's Bureau of Benefits Administration (BBA).
As a Retirement Technician Supervisor, you will be part of the PSERS team that provides professional and technical services to the Public School employees including active and inactive members, retirees, beneficiaries, and persons legally authorized to act on their behalf.
This role leads a team of Retirement Technicians, providing the full scope of supervisory duties, and serves as a subject matter expert for all processes within the designated work unit.
The BBA is organized into two divisions: Member Account Division and the Benefits and Exceptions Division. Because production work is cyclical and subject to legislative changes, work staff may be assigned to perform a variety of tasks in other business areas based on PSERS operational needs.
If you have previous work experience in a pension system or related occupational area, are proficient in Microsoft office products, can provide clear and logical communication both verbal and written, and want to use your skills to be a leader and serve the members of PSERS, this opportunity may be the right fit for you.

As a Retirement Technician Supervisor, you will work with and oversee a team of Retirement Technicians to apply the provisions of the Retirement Code, rules, regulations, PSERS legal opinions, business rules and procedures as they relate to member accounts, employer reported data, benefit eligibility and benefit determination.
As a supervisor you will conduct performance evaluations, monitor and approve leave requests, prioritize and assign work, coach staff to develop their skills, provide encouragement and support to staff to meet goals, and assist in training so staff can reach appropriate skill levels of their position.
You will provide direction, guidance, and inspiration to staff, facilitate positive change, manage the staff and responsibilities within the designated work unit, assist in development of work standards, goals, objectives, operational and procedural guidelines, communicate to all staff expectations, changes, and updates, and ensure staff complete all required trainings as well as provide opportunities for training that will grow their skills and career.
This position is also responsible to work closely with the Retirement Administrator to communicate, discuss, and assist with staff issues, establish goals and objectives, identify training needs, develop new or revise existing procedures to ensure efficiency and better workflows, and provide activity logs and production reports for management.
You will ensure all requests for information are researched and accurately answered, monitor the units effectiveness and workflows, develop short and long term plans to meet workload demands, and work with various staff from other Bureaus in PSERS to resolve problems.
Candidates who will be successful in this role will enjoy analyzing data, can manage workloads and changing priorities, enjoy being a problem solver, and can use experience and logic to exercise independent decision-making related to work assignments.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time.
This position will be required to report to the office one day each month, and any additional days depending on operational needs.
In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
