This position is primarily located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, C.M. Tucker Jr. Nurse Care Center-Roddey Pavilion, 2200 Harden St. Columbia, SC 29203.

As the Respiratory Therapist, under limited supervision, with emphasis on adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations residing in the long-term care and acute psychiatric settings, will fulfill physician/ NP orders for respiratory care. Assure therapy effectiveness, set patient goals, and assess patient progress while working as an interdisciplinary team member. Perform diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician/NP within their and the facilities scope of practice in a timely manner. Assist the Respiratory Supervisor with Quality/Performance Improvement projects. Provide patient, family and caregiver education when necessary. Perform supervisory duties in the Respiratory Supervisor's absence.

Responsibilities for the Respiratory Therapist include:
  • Perform patient assessments and evaluations. Develop care plans, monitor patient responses, and progress toward their goals.
  • Provide respiratory therapy and conduct testing on patients as ordered.
  • Provide patient, family, and staff education.
  • Document care provided and test results accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Routinely assess respiratory equipment and devices for proper function.
  • Assist the Respiratory Supervisor with Quality/Performance Improvement monitors.
  • Perform day-to-day supervisory duties in the absence of the Respiratory Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be registered as a Respiratory Therapist
Additional Requirements
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Have a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Information

Post hire, employees must:
  • Have extensive knowledge of Respiratory Therapy principles and modalities.
  • Be able to operate complex respiratory equipment, patient assessment and care planning.
  • Be licensed with the state of South Carolina to practice as a Respiratory Therapist. Current and valid NBRC certification. AHA BLS certified.
