Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team that runs a housing unit in a prison, focusing on keeping everyone safe, running things smoothly, and helping staff and inmates grow in a positive way.

It's a management role in corrections where you'll oversee daily operations and support rehabilitation efforts.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in prison supervision who is committed to safety, ethics, and team leadership.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any field, or equivalent high school diploma plus additional experience
  • One year of experience at a level equivalent to Corrections Shift Supervisor 12, Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor 11, or similar P11 roles in adult corrections
  • Alternatively, two years equivalent to Corrections Shift Supervisor 11
  • Alternatively, three years equivalent to Corrections Medical Unit Officer E10, Resident Unit Officer E10, or similar E10 roles
  • No felony convictions; must complete any sentence including parole or probation for misdemeanors or felonies
  • Subject to pre-appointment and random drug and alcohol testing
  • Ability to uphold high ethical standards and report conflicts of interest

Requirements

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Experience
Resident Unit Manager 13
One year of experience equivalent to a Corrections Shift Supervisor 12, Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor 11, Corrections Program Coordinator P11, Prison Counselor P11, Parole Probation Officer P11, Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional P11, or a Clinical Social Worker P11 or Psychologist P11 in an adult correctional facility.
OR
Two years equivalent to a Corrections Shift Supervisor 11.
OR
Three years equivalent to a Corrections Medical Unit Officer E10, Corrections Resident Representative
E10, Resident Unit Officer E10, or a Special Alternative Incarceration Officer E10.

Qualifications

Alternate Education and Experience Resident Unit Manager 13
Education level typically acquired through completion of high school and three years of experience equivalent to a Corrections Shift Supervisor 13 or Corrections Security Inspector 13 may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

New hires to the MDOC, along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years, will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
