Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a high-tech lab to create and refine tiny electronic components for advanced quantum computers and sensors, testing them at super-cold temperatures, and sharing findings with teams inside and outside the government.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-12 level, including hands-on microfabrication and materials chemistry with thin-film deposition, etching, and characterization using tools like AFM, SEM, and FIB-SEM
  • Extensive experience developing fabrication processes for superconductive electronic circuits in ISO Class 5 or better cleanroom environments
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with cryogenic electrical testing of superconductive devices and circuits
  • Experience with flip-chip electronics packaging and cryogenic reliability testing of chip packages
  • Ability to plan experiments, mentor staff and students, document research, collaborate with partners, write proposals, and present at conferences

Full Job Description

The RF Technology Division is seeking an employee to develop and improve wafer fabrication and packaging processes for superconductive quantum and classical circuits; design experiments and testing methods; perform cryogenic characterization; mentor staff; document and communicate research; and collaborate with partners to advance mission-critical quantum R&D.

Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR B.

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND In addition to the specialized experience listed above, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level, (ZP-III at NIST).

Specialized experience is defined as: - Hands-on experience in microfabrication and materials chemistry, including thin-film deposition/etching and thin-film materials characterization/physical analysis including AFM, SEM, and FIB-SEM.

- Extensive experience developing fabrication processes for superconductive electronic circuits in ISO Class 5 (or better) cleanroom environments.

- Hands-on laboratory experience with cryogenic electrical testing of superconductive devices and circuits.

-Experience with flip-chip electronics packaging and cryogenic reliability testing of those chip packages.

In this position, you will: - Plan and perform wafer fabrication process development and chip packaging process development to improve the cryogenic performance, yield, and reliability of quantum and classical superconductive electronic circuits and quantum sensors and systems.

- Design and layout devices, functional circuits, and process control monitors for characterizing processes.

- Create project plans, design experiments, improve test infrastructure, and perform room temperature and cryogenic testing to characterize circuit performance.

- Train and mentor staff and graduate students in these duties.

- Document research progress and results; communicate and collaborate with NIST researchers as well as with industry, academic, and other non-NIST government researchers to advance NIST mission-critical quantum research and development.

- Write proposals for internal and external funding sources; present results at NIST internal meetings as well as at domestic and international technical conferences; publish technical research results and best practices.
