Full Job Description

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for professional level work in the nutrition services programs for the elderly or Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), requiring continuous nutrition service, such as nutrition assessment, nutrition education and nutrition intake analysis. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM4.16. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Requirements

  • Investigates complaints and/or deficiencies pertaining to dietary and nutrition services subject to Federal, State, and local standards.
  • Evaluates program and/or service performance to determine compliance with Federal, State, and local guidelines/regulations.
  • Observes efficiency and effectiveness of programs operations and makes recommendations concerning improvements.
  • Plans and implements nutrition and dietary services and programs offered by the Department.
  • Develops and evaluates policies and procedures necessary to carry out specific programs.
  • Coordinates activities with the staff involved in nutrition services.
  • Coordinates and plans for effective utilization of this information through training, advising, and educational programs.
  • Coordinates and evaluates nutrition and dietary services and programs within the Department and with other agencies and institutions; makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
  • Serves as a nutrition expert and resource person for the WIC program and the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department.
  • Provides nutrition assessment and counseling for high-risk WIC participants.
  • Creates a plan of care and provides measurable goals for each high-risk client.
  • Provides nutrition education training for the WIC staff on a variety of pertinent nutrition topics.
  • Approves all Local Agency non-contract formula requests. Communicates with the State Agency regarding approval of Local Agency lesson-plans, and all aspects of nutrition education including policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 semester hours in Food & Nutrition.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
  • Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, American Dietetic Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of experience with the WIC Program or in community nutrition.
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

    • Knowledge of principles and practices of human nutrition.
    • Ability to understand the behavioral characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of the elderly or needs of infants, children and pregnant postpartum, and lactating women, depending on assignment.
    • Ability to relate and respond to individuals and groups of varied cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
    • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
    • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff engaged in the operation of the City sponsored Senior Citizens Project, if assigned to the Department of Human Services.
    • Ability to organize, lead, and involve the site personnel and participants in program activities, if assigned to the Department of Human Services.
    • Ability to teach program participants how to correct nutritional deficiencies and improve their diet, if assigned to the Health Department.
    • Ability to perform nutrition analysis.
