Job Description
Summary
This job involves driving a truck to pick up trash, yard waste, and large items from curbsides in residential areas, while keeping the vehicle clean and in good working order.
It also includes interacting with residents to explain collection rules and performing routine safety checks on the truck.
A good fit would be someone reliable and physically fit who enjoys hands-on outdoor work and has basic driving experience.
Key Requirements
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Ability to read and understand written instructions
- Six months of refuse collection or commercial driving experience preferred
- Physical ability to lift and load heavy items like garbage cans, furniture, and tree limbs
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
- Maintain truck by fueling, washing, and checking lights and brakes
- Pass all entry-level testing and assessments
Full Job Description
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 9 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $41,503-$45,653
Requirements
Essential functions include but are not limited to:Collects and disposes of waste by operating an automated truck, using the truck to pick up ninety gallon garbage cans, furniture, tree limbs, etc.

Qualifications

Six (6) months refuse collection experience or commercial driving experience desired.
