Job Description

Summary

This job involves creating and running music programs for people of all ages, teaching classes in different music styles, and managing a recreation facility to keep it safe and fun.

It also includes promoting events and building community connections to encourage healthy living through music.

A good fit would be someone passionate about music education with teaching experience and strong organizational skills.

Key Requirements

  • Knowledge equivalent to six months to one year of advanced study or training in music or music education
  • Experience teaching music classes in at least two different mediums
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate performing arts programs for youth, teens, adults, and seniors
  • Skills in facility management, including scheduling staff/volunteers, preparing reports, and collecting fees
  • Proficiency in marketing programs through flyers, press releases, and community events
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • First Aid and CPR Certification

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist to be responsible for the development and implementation of music programs, leading classes, and promoting overall wellness. Department Starting Hiring Salary: $51,610.42

Requirements

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating performing arts programs and daily activities for youth, teens, adults, and seniors.
  • Develop, organize, and tech musical classes in at least two different mediums.
  • Assist with developing and implementing fee-based, class structure to contribute to the cultural growth of individuals through musical programming.
  • Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans, program planning, and collecting fees.
  • Market programs by creating flyers/announcements to the community, submitting press releases, and serving on committees for the planning and marketing of events.
  • Interacts with and develops a positive relationship with the public by responding to inquiries, contributing to the growth and development of students and volunteers.
  • Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submit and write initiatives, provide input on budgetary spending and revenue generation.

Qualifications

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Preferred candidate will have:
  • At least six months to one year of advanced study in music or music education
  • Experience in teaching music and music classes.
  • Valid Driver’s License First Aid
  • CPR Certification

Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events
