Job Description

Summary

This seasonal lifeguard job involves watching over swimmers at an indoor or outdoor pool on a Navy base in Gulfport, Mississippi, to keep everyone safe during the summer of 2026.

You'll enforce rules, perform rescues if needed, and maintain the pool area. It's a good fit for strong swimmers who enjoy working with people and have some experience in safety or recreation roles.

Key Requirements

  • Pass the swim pre-qualification test: swim 150 meters using free or breast stroke, tread water for 2 minutes using only legs, and retrieve a brick from 7-10 feet underwater in under 1 minute 40 seconds
  • Complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course
  • At least 12 months of lifeguard experience for Recreation Assistant level (NF-0189-02); entry-level (NF-0189-01) has no minimum

  • Ability to identify hazards, enforce rules, and communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Skills in conducting safety inspections, pool chemical testing, and rescue techniques

Full Job Description

This position is located at the Fitness Division, Aquatics Branch of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, CBC Gulfport, MS.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform lifeguard duties which involve the safeguarding of the lives of patrons of the indoor or outdoor pool located at CBC Gulfport.

Cert to Hire seasonal Lifeguard program Candidates must pass the swim pre-qualification (SWIM-TREAD-SWIM: SWIM 150 METERS USING FREE, BREAST OR BOTH.

MAINTAIN POSITION AT THE SURFACE FOR 2 MINS BY TREADING WATER USING ONLY LEGS.

MAINTAIN SWIM 50 METERS and a min and 40 second brick retrieval), initial interview process, sign an employment commitment letter stating they will remain under our employ for 2 seasons, and complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course.

Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Recreation Aide NF-0189-01 does not have a minimum length of experience requirement.

Recreation Assistant NF-0189-02 requires at least 12 months experience performing the duties of a lifeguard. Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules.

Knowledge of the beach environment, marine life, and beach water hazards.

(Waterfront Only) Knowledge of DoD, DON, and CNIC policies and procedures governing aquatic assessment testing and certifications.

Knowledge of applicable policies and procedures of MWR regarding the use of Aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.

Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazardous situations and identify a patron's need for assistance immediately.

Ability to tactfully, but forcefully, provide instruction on water safety, facility rules and regulations, and enforce them.

Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area to ensure they meet environmental health standards.

Knowledge of and ability to conduct pool chemical testing, document the results, and adjust chemical imbalances, as directed, if applicable.

Skilled or proficient in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communications to perform a safe and efficient rescue operation. Ability to exercise control over a large group of people.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Major Duties:

General (includes but not limited to): Responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool. Remain alert and continuously observe swimming area to ensure safety of patrons.

Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, assist swimmers having difficulty and rescue those in trouble.

Perform rescue work and when necessary, render first aid until such time as qualified doctor or other emergency personnel are present. In case of a serious accident will call for an ambulance.

Prepare complete accident report. Alert supervisor of unusual circumstances.

Perform any necessary housekeeping tasks to ensure proper standards of cleanliness, sanitation and appearance of pool and related facilities (vacuuming pool, cleaning deck, etc.) Inspect pool and surrounding area ensuring cleanliness and safety at all times.

Check chlorine and PH levels on a scheduled basis. Immediately communicate problems or concerns of the aquatic environment to the aquatics manager.

Determine patron eligibility and provides quality customer service to patrons. Answer questions and provides program information to patrons.

May assist with scheduled pool parties after hours of operation or with a base wide special event. Maintain daily logs and records. Perform other duties as assigned.
