Summary

This job is for a lifeguard at a swimming pool on Travis Air Force Base in California, where you'll watch over swimmers to keep everyone safe, enforce rules, and handle emergencies like rescues or first aid.

It's a flexible, temporary role with no guaranteed hours, up to 40 per week, including nights and weekends, and training for certifications is provided.

A good fit would be someone at least 16 years old who enjoys working with people, has some experience around pools or water activities, and can stay alert in a busy environment.

About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Outdoor Recreation, Swimming Pool at Travis Air Force Base, CA.

This is a temporary position not to exceed 1 December 2026. Certification training will be provided by Outdoor Recreation.

Intermittent (Flexible) employees have no guaranteed hours but may work up to 40 hours per week. Who May Apply: Open to everyone.

An applicant's eligibility will be determined based on eligibility claimed in the questionnaire and proof of eligibility MUST be provided with application by the closing date, 05/08/2026 Business Based Action, Military Spouse Preference, Outside Applicant Veteran, Spouse/Widow/Parent of Veteran, and Transition Hiring Preference In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience: Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules, and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable.

Must be able to work an uncommon tour of duty to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must be able to obtain an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic training, and CPR (both child and adult) training.

Must be at least 16 years of age. Major Duties:

Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at a scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area.

Maintains order and enforces established rules of safety and behavior. Rescues swimmers in trouble, administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed.

Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail.

May operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards.

Ensures that diving boards, slides and any specialty equipment are inspected frequently for cracks, loose matting or hardware and necessary repair are made.

Collects admission fees, make change, and complete appropriate forms. Assists in teaching swimming lessons and may assist in demonstrating basic swim strokes.

Advise instructor concerning student progress/problems. May performs other related or incidental duties assigned for the daily operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
