Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting and overseeing the safe operation of military training ranges at Fort Bragg, ensuring everything from live fire exercises to landing zones runs smoothly and follows safety rules.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in military operations or security who pays close attention to details and can work with different teams to prevent accidents.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in at least two of the following: conducting site inspections of ranges/training areas, performing physical security checks for safety compliance, supporting range operations and live fire coordination, or maintaining data and generating quality control reports
  • 52 weeks of federal service at the GS-5 level or equivalent within the last 52 weeks (time-in-grade requirement)
  • Current permanent Department of the Army civilian employee eligible for time-limited assignment, promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade
  • Ability to monitor live fire ranges, artillery points, landing zones, and parachute drop zones, including issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing procedures
  • Skills in reviewing and advising on range schedules, safety certifications, standard operating procedures (SOPs), firing orders, risk assessments, and surface danger zone (SDZ) overlays
  • Experience generating reports and acting on warning bulletins, daily status updates, and training matches
  • No education substitution allowed; must qualify based on experience alone

About the Position:erves as Range Inspector within the Operations section, Range Branch, responsible for safe and coordinated use of the Fort Bragg and Camp MacKall training areas.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Conducting site inspections of the range and/or training area complexes; OR 2) Performing physical security checks of the facilities ensuring compliance of safety procedures; OR 3) Providing support on operating ranges and coordinating use of live fire facilities; OR 4)Maintaining data and generating reports for quality control.

You must meet 2 out of the 4 statements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-6).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-6).

Major Duties:

  • Monitor the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges, artillery, MLRS and mortar firing points, landing zones, parachute drop zones, etc.
  • Advise and assist the Range Operations Chief, the Installation Range Officer, unit trainers, commanders, and staffs of Active and Reserve Component units of all U.S. forces and services.
  • Review and compare the Daily Range Schedule, unit OIC/RSO and Weapons certification memoranda, SOPs, firing orders, on file Range Risk Assessments, surface danger zone (SDZ) overlays.
  • Responsible to review and act on warning bulletins, Daily Range Schedules, daily range status boards and sheets, Range Risk Assessments match training conducted.
