Requirements

Transmits and receives coded and conventional messages to and from Sheriff’s stations and administrative, investigative, and patrol units via voice and digital communications.

Differentiates between routine, priority, and emergency messages and initiates or follows through on responses or advises supervisory personnel as required.

Evaluates, selects, and acts upon the most urgent multiple messages received from field units and re-establishes contact with bypassed units in order of apparent urgency.

Expedites emergency radio traffic between stations and field units by coordinating assistance response of personnel and equipment through the selection and utilization of communication channels that best meet the needs of the specific situation.

Upon the request of field units, selects and interrogates nationwide criminal justice data banks using a keyboard and monitor to obtain information on warrants, driver history, missing persons, vehicles, firearms, and miscellaneous property.

Analyzes the response for compatibility with the request and relays it to the requesting field unit.

Enters unit responses and clearances into the Sheriff’s Computer Aided Dispatch System.

Operates computerized telephone equipment at the Sheriff’s Communication Center, which enables the Sheriff’s Communication Center to maintain cold line communications with all Sheriff’s stations, public safety agencies, private safety agencies, and non-emergent agencies.

Obtains information from alarm companies and sends incidents to the appropriate sheriff's station; and obtains information for all County alarms and makes proper notifications.

Broadcasts information over radio or telephone lines using the proper dispatcher terminology.

Performs other related duties, as required.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
Graduation from high school or its equivalent*.

TYPEWRITING SKILLS
Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute (WPM).

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

Successful completion of the mandatory Department sponsored in-service Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Course and the Sheriff's Communication Center Public Response Dispatcher Training program are required prior to final appointment.

*Evidence of equivalent high school equivalency includes having successfully passed the GED, TASC, HiSET, or CHSPE. To determine if the diploma is equivalent to those of U.S. high schools, the foreign transcripts (high school, college or university) must be evaluated by one of the approved organizations listed on the State of California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing website, http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl635.pdf or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, http://www.naces.org. These organizations are private enterprises who charge a fee for their services.

To receive credit for the education requirement, you MUST include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution at the time of filing, or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing.

The document should show the date the diploma was conferred and be in English; if it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards.

Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted to meet the education requirement.


ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF FILING IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS EXAMINATION.


SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
The examination will consist of two (2) parts:

PART I
A qualifying online typing assessment of 30 net words per minute (wpm). Applicants do not need to appear in person, and may complete the online assessment on a personal device during a specified examination period.

You may not need to take a typing test if you meet any of the following:

  • Current or former County employees who have held a typing position that required the necessary wpm.
  • Applicants who have already taken and passed the County's typing performance test (administered by the Department of Human Resources) at the required wpm. If your passing score is already on file, it will be transferred automatically—no need to retest.
  • Applicants who passed the “Typing Test – Score-Banking Only” with the required net wpm. Your score will also transfer automatically.
  • Applicants who passed a County typing test through a different department (not DHR), please attach a copy of your typing certificate to your application when you apply.

    If you can’t attach it during filing, you must email it to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing.

    If you don't meet one of the above conditions, we will send you a link to the Los Angeles County typing performance test during the examination process.

    Applicants who do not pass their online typing assessment will not be allowed an additional opportunity, and failure to complete the assessment will result in automatic disqualification.


    WE WILL ONLY ADVANCE THE ONES WHO ACHIEVE PASSING SCORES IN THE PERFORMANCE TYPING TEST TO PART II.

    PART II
    An Entry Level Dispatcher Selection Battery written test evaluating verbal, reasoning, memory, and perceptual abilities weighted 100%.

    This test has been developed and validated by the Commission of POST. Individuals that have taken the POST certified written test within the last 12 months may submit their test score for verification, in lieu of taking this written test.

    If you wish to retake the test rather than transfer your score, THE LATEST WRITTEN SCORE WILL APPLY. All transferred test scores are subject to verification by POST's Standards and Evaluations Services Bureau.

    YOU CANNOT REVIEW THE WRITTEN AND PERFORMANCE TYPING TESTS PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    YOU MUST ACQUIRE A SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.


    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

    If you require an accommodation to fairly complete any part of the assessment process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation.

    We will contact you to guide you through the process.

    You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation and failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and possibility of initial placement on the eligible register.


    VETERAN'S CREDITIf you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran’s credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score.

    We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org as soon as possible to ensure prompt processing.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATIONApplicants who passed the assessments are placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months.

    The eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Technology and Support Division, Communications and Fleet Management Bureau.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A DETAILED BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH.

    Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.


    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.

    APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.


    WORK CONDITIONS

    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day. Appointees MUST agree to the specified working conditions listed on the supplemental questionnaire.
