Agency Summary

The Office of Public Health and Safety works to address the root causes of crime and addictions and aims to reduce violence in Indianapolis neighborhoods.

The office convenes public safety and public health agencies along with community partners to execute focused policy efforts in the areas of food security, re-entry, homelessness, violence reduction and behavioral health.

Job Summary

This position provides program management, stakeholder management, and administrative support to the community food programs and organizations for the OPHS Division of Community Nutrition and Food Policy.

This role focuses on developing and disseminating the city's food equity framework, engaging with community members and stakeholders, and implementing initiatives to improve food access and equity throughout Marion County.

Position reports to the Administrator of Community Nutrition and Food Policy.


Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Program Management and Administrative Support:

  • Assist in the ongoing assessment and implementation of the city's food equity framework.
  • Support continuous improvement of food-related work by the City.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for food programs and policy initiatives.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Engage residents, partners, and city agencies to gather necessary data inputs.
  • Obtain input from community members, business owners, farmers, growers, and other food system constituents.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to build public awareness and buy-in for food equity work.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Communicate with stakeholders, funders, and community partners to inform them of work progress, deadlines, meetings, and initiatives.
  • Foster positive relationships and trust with City and OPHS staff, community members, business leaders, and food partners.
  • Policy and Program Development:
  • Collaborate with City Departments, including the Office of Education, IMPD, IFD, and Code Enforcement, to ensure access to healthy meals and nutritious food for Marion County families and children.
  • Expand the local food supply and implement creative solutions to improve the local food market.
  • Identify and recruit new stakeholders to address food insecurity in Marion County.
  • Meet with local stakeholders, elected officials, and other city and county employees to understand concerns about food insecurity and provide updates.
  • Grant Writing and Project Management:
  • Provide grant writing and project management services to support various grants and projects.
  • Coordinate and support other grants, projects, and activities OPHS undertakes.
  • Assist with planning and budget preparation for the Division's initiatives.

Communications and Outreach:

  • Develop web and social media content related to the Division’s food programs and partnerships.
  • Assist community food programs and organizations in building public awareness and support for food equity initiatives.
  • Create and distribute newsletters and other communication materials.
  • Maintain and update website content and email distribution lists.

Volunteer Coordination:

  • Assist in recruiting, engaging, and coordinating volunteers for OPHS community food programs and organizations around food initiatives.
  • Provide support and guidance to volunteers involved in food equity projects.

Record Keeping and Compliance:

  • Establish and maintain procedures for record-keeping and compliance.
  • Ensure that records and files are up-to-date and accessible at all times.


Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public health, Nutrition, Food Policy, Social Work, or a related field. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in community engagement, public health, food policy, or related areas.

Strong project management and administrative skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with grant writing and managing funded projects.

Proficiency in using social media and web-based communication tools. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and community members.

Knowledge of food systems and issues related to food equity and access.


Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

• ServSafe Certification

• Food Handlers Certification

• CACFP Management Professional (CMP)

• Produce Safety Alliance Certification

Working Conditions

Essential functions are regularly performed in an office setting without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

This position may require some evening, weekend and holiday work to attend community meetings and events. The role involves both office-based tasks and community engagement activities.

  2. Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10) pounds
  3. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or workstation
