Summary

This job involves leading communication strategies and policies to support military families and service members, including creating content for various platforms and analyzing data to improve engagement.

About the Position: This position is assigned to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy (DASD (MC&FP), Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs (M&RA), Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Personnel and Readiness (USD (P&R)).

This position may be eligible for situational telework as determined by the agency policy.

Specialized Experience for the GS 14: One year of specialized experience which includes directing and shaping communication strategies, policies, and initiatives addressing the needs of service members and their families; leading media and community relations strategies to advance organizational objectives; developing an effective content lifecycle and editorial strategy across traditional and digital platforms; and monitoring and analyzing data-driven insights to continuously optimize content effectiveness for user experience, search engine optimization, and audience engagement.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).

Major Duties:

  • Direct and shape policies, media and community relations strategies, and production of communications materials.
  • Develop content for search engine optimization, user experience and/or customer conversion.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of program and regulatory requirements, management principles or the application of technology to community support programs.
  • Conduct needs assessment through established feedback mechanisms of military services and/or reserve component program managers.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with national, state, local, and military leaders with vested interests in improving quality of life for service members and their families.
  • Develop policies advancing programs in support of service members and/or their families for use by others within or outside the organization.
  • Develop a variety of programs, services, and training responsive to the special needs of service members and their families.
  • Review assigned programs for potential efficiencies based on joint service initiatives and/or federal partnership opportunities.
  • Initiate partnerships with military services and reserve components to resolve a variety of complex issues involving service members and their families.
  • Deliver presentations to audiences on services available for service members and/or their families.
