We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a service-oriented, fast-paced environment and is committed to making a meaningful impact in the criminal justice system. The Pretrial Probation Officer conducts interviews, verifies critical information, administers risk assessments, makes appropriate referrals, and prepares reports that support judicial officials in making informed decisions. The position also manages a caseload of justice-involved individuals, provides supervision and guidance to those released pretrial, and contributes to the broader goals of Norfolk Criminal Justice Services.

Department Hiring Salary: $49,152

Requirements

Client Interviews & Investigations:
  • Conduct face-to-face interviews in jail and office settings

  • Conduct detailed investigations using multiple sources

  • Verify information and interpret criminal history and court records

  • Prepare risk assessment reports for judicial review

  • Present testimony in court as required

Case Management & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate electronic client records

  • Conduct research to update files and track compliance

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure information reliability

  • Administer drug and/or alcohol tests

  • Communicate professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, or related fields such as psychology, sociology, social work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • No previous experience required; CRJ internship preferred.

Additional Information

  • Valid driver's license may be required by assignment
  • Able to obtain certification to access Virginia Criminal Information Networks/National Crime Information Center databases
  • US Citizenship or lawful residency for a minimum of 10 years
  • Obtain and maintain a VCIN/NCIC certification
  • Obtain and maintain CJIS clearance
  • Obtain and maintain local jail clearance
  • Complete the Department of Criminal Justice Services CORE training within 1 year of employment
  • Obtain NAPSA certification within 1 year of employment

Work Hours: M-F 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Must be flexible in work schedule
