This role focuses on promoting and coordinating prescribed burns to lower the risk of wildfires across South Carolina by working with landowners, agencies, and forestry staff.
The coordinator organizes training workshops, helps with actual burns and wildfire responses, and builds partnerships to make communities safer from fires.
It's ideal for someone passionate about environmental management, with experience in natural resources and a willingness to stay physically fit for fieldwork.
Serves as the SCFC lead to increase the use of prescribed fire to mitigate wildfire risk and to coordinate the effective use of partner organizations to accomplish prescribed burning.
Coordinates with SCFC personnel to efficiently allocate resources for agency prescribed burning to reduce wildfire risk.
Helps organize and conduct training for landowners such as "Learn to Burn" workshops with the goal of enabling them to conduct prescribed burning on their property to reduce wildfire risk.
Helps CPFM graduates locate opportunities for mentoring and completion of their certification.
Works with agency staff and partners to encourage the development and sustaining of prescribed burn associations and to identify and prioritize areas where prescribed fire can most effectively be used to reduce wildfire risk to communities, citizens and first responders.
Within 1 year must become NWCG Certified Firefighter 2.
Within 1 year must complete the following training courses: NWCG Wildland Firefighter Training (S-130), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighter Type 1 Training (S-131), Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS-100), National Incident Management System, An Introduction (IS-700), Basic Command System for Incident Response (ICS-200), Intermediate Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents (ICS-300), Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180), and Annual Fireline Safety Refresher (RT-130).
