Job Description

Summary

This job is for a licensed practical nurse working in a Michigan prison, where you'll assist registered nurses and medical providers by supporting clinic activities and providing care to inmates in a secure facility.

It's a hands-on role involving daily interaction with prisoners in a structured environment that includes random drug and alcohol testing.

A good fit would be someone with nursing training who is comfortable in high-security settings, reliable, and interested in public service, especially veterans who may benefit from the department's supportive programs.

Key Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Michigan Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license from an approved practical nursing education program
  • Ability to work 100% of the time with prisoners in a Level I/III/IV correctional facility
  • Submission of official transcripts or certificate from nursing program with application
  • No prior experience required, but must meet all application submission guidelines through NEOGOV
  • Eligibility for employment: No felony convictions per Public Act 191 of 2017; completion of any misdemeanor/felony sentences including parole/probation

Functions as staff nurse under the direction of a registered nurse supervisor. This position will provide support services to the medical service providers (MSP) and assist with clinic activities. Works 100% of the time with prisoners in a level I/III/IV facility. This is a random alcohol and drug tested position.

Requirements

Education
Possession of a certificate from a practical nursing education program accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Experience
No specific type or amount is required.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
