Summary

This job involves maintaining and fixing electrical power systems, engines, and related equipment used to support aircraft operations in the Air Force Reserve.

Workers install, inspect, repair, and troubleshoot generators, distribution systems, and aircraft arresting barriers to ensure reliable power and safety.

It's a good fit for hands-on mechanics with experience in electrical and engine work who can work independently and follow safety protocols.

Key Requirements

The primary purpose of this position is to install, operate, inspect, maintain, and repair electrical power production equipment and associated components, electrical distribution equipment, diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines, and aircraft arresting barriers.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG 5400 Industrial Equipment Operation Family.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems; and the operation of emergency generator power systems.

Knowledge of the theory and operation of internal combustion diesel and gasoline engines.

Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; environmental standards and requirements; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.

Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides; and using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and micrometers.

Skill in installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems; maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and reconditioning internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline; and troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators.

Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Major Duties:

  • • Installs, inspects, and performs modifications and repairs to electrical power support systems such as electrical power plants and power distribution equipment.
  • • Performs preventive maintenance on electrical power support systems.
  • • Performs major repair, replacement, and overhaul of power support system components such as diesel, multi-fuel, or gas turbine engines, and electrical accessories of engines.
  • • Troubleshoots electrical power support systems such as electrical power plants and power distribution equipment.
  • • Maintains, inspects, repairs, diagnoses, and modifies aircraft arrestor barrier units.
  • • Maintains records and documents actions.
  • • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
