When the school years ends and the temperature begins to rise, the City of Pasadena aquatics season begins! The Aquatics program offers swim lessons for all swim levels, as well as recreational swimming. Start your summer off by joining our team!

A Pool Manager (Summer) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a swimming pool complex.

The ideal candidate will possess leadership skills to effectively carry out the summer aquatics program at their pool site.

This person must hold current Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding & Water Safety Instruction.

To be successful in this position, individuals must be responsible and vigilant to ensure the safety of the customer.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding & Water Safety Instruction certifications MUST be attached to online application at the time of submission to participate in this examination process.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Aquatics staff must work from Monday, June 8, 2026 through Saturday, August 8, 2026. Dates subject to change depending on program need. Work hours vary (up to 37 hours/week) depending on assignment, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

MANDATORY TRAINING:

Week of June 8, 2026. Employees are required to attend.

SWIM TEST: Saturday March 21, 2026 between 10:00am - 12:00pm and Saturday March 28, 2026 between 10:00am – 12:00pm.

LOCATION: Honorable John J. Kennedy Pool 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103. Must be able to attend one of the swim test dates.

  • Oversees the safe and efficient operation of the swimming pool complex.
  • Schedules, assigns and supervises the work of staff.
  • Plans and supervises a swimming recreation program involving instruction for beginners to advanced swimmers.
  • Responsible for collection and reporting of fees.
  • Ensures that all rules, regulations and safety practices are properly enforced.
  • Reports all accidents and sees that victims receive proper care.
  • Administers first aid if necessary.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the pool and the adjoining area and building.
  • Maintains effective public relations.
  • Handles complaints.
  • Dispenses swimming activity information.
  • Responsible for preparation of all operating records and reports
  • Operates a variety of office equipment, including PC's and related software.
  • Physical strength and agility to lift 75 pounds, bend in all directions, and pull and lower items up to 75 pounds.
  • Provides swimming lessons to the public; and performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years' experience as a lifeguard, including one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Required American Red Cross Certifications: Lifeguarding & Water Safety Instructor.
  • Must have the ability to swim 500 yards in 10 minutes, 30 seconds.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with online recreation management systems, such as CivicRec is highly desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process will consist of a combination of training and experience evaluation, timed swim test, and department-level interviews.

VACANCY INFORMATION:

Summer vacancies occurring in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department may be filled as a result of this examination process.

Candidates may be offered positions with lower stated qualifications than those for which they have applied/qualified based upon operational determinations of the Recreation and Aquatics supervisors.

PROBATIONARY WORK TEST PERIOD = At- will (Summer Temporary Employment)
FLSA = Non-exempt
UNIT = Hourly

Additional Information


Candidates must possess at time of application the following American Red Cross Certifications: Lifeguarding Certifications and Water Safety Instructor.

Candidates selected for this position will be required to attend mandatory training sessions and other in-service trainings week of June 8, 2026. Failure to attend these sessions may be cause for termination.

Candidates are required to successfully complete a medical examination, including drug screen and a criminal background live scan screen consistent with current state and federal law.

Physical strength and agility to lift 75 pounds, bend in all directions, and pull and lower items up to 75 pounds.
